The tennis season’s second major takes place this coming fortnight with the French Open that starts in Paris on Sunday.
World #1 and 2-time French Open champion Iga Swiatek is favored over the entire field on the women’s side. However, there are some concerns about Swiatek’s fitness after she retired from her semifinal match in Rome this last week because of a leg injury. If the top seed isn’t 100%, the door could be open for Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka, who faced each other in the Australian Open final at the beginning of the year.

3-star value play: Elena Rybakina (+700)
If one player can handle being in the top half of the draw with Swiatek, it’s Elena Rybakina. The Kazakh leads their head-to-head series 3-1, and that includes a perfect 3-0 record this season. Rybakina prevailed 6-4 6-4 in the Australian Open fourth round and 6-2 6-2 in the Indian Wells semis before Swiatek retired at 2-2 in the third set of their recent Rome semifinal showdown. It’s not an overstatement to say that Rybakina has the world #1’s number right now.
It should also be noted that over the past three majors Rybakina has a title (2022 Wimbledon) and a runner-up performance (2023 Australian Open). She thrives on the big stage, so a second straight clay-court title on the heels of her Rome success would not be surprising in the least.

2-star value play: Aryna Sabalenka (+700)
It was Aryna Sabalenka who beat Rybakina for the Australian Open title and a rematch in a second consecutive Grand Slam final would not come as any kind of shock. Both players are on fire at the moment. Sabalenka’s surge also includes a runner-up effort in Indian Wells (lost to Rybakina) and a pair of clay-court finals (lost to Swiatek in Stuttgart, defeated Swiatek in Madrid).
The second-ranked Belarusian has a favorable French Open draw away from Swiatek and Rybakina, so it is all setting up nicely for her chances.

1-star value play: Jessica Pegula (+4000)
I’ve been on the Jessica Pegula bandwagon plenty of times in 2023 and I will remain on it as she continues to be disrespected by the market. In addition to the fact that the 29-year-old American is in good form and has established herself as one of the best and certainly most consistent players on tour, her path to the title at Roland Garros is ideal.
She would not face Sabalenka until the semis and either Swiatek or Rybakina until the final. Ranked 3rd in the world, Pegula may not be at her very best on clay but she recently advanced to the semifinals in Charleston and the quarters in Madrid. At +4000, she’s worth a shot.
