CFB Week 13 early best bet: Arizona State Sun Devils -3.5 over BYU Cougars (-110)

The Sun Devils and the Cougars experienced much different results in Week 12. The former won at Kansas State, while the latter lost at home to Kansas. With the loss, BYU dropped into a 2-way tie with Colorado atop the Big 12 standings. Meanwhile, Arizona State rose into a tie for 2nd with Iowa State in the conference standings with its win over the Jayhawks. If the Sun Devils manage to pull out the victory at home against BYU this week, they put themselves in a very good position to earn a Big 12 Championship Game berth with their final game being against in-state rival Arizona – who is 4-6 overall and 2-5 in conference.

Arizona State is set up for success against this BYU defense. The Sun Devils have kept the ball on the ground at a top-25 rate since Week 7, spearheaded by running back Cam Skattebo and his 1,074 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns. Skattebo is graded the 2nd-best runner in the Big 12 by PFF, as he has the 2nd-most yards after contact and missed tackles forced in the Big 12 despite missing a conference game. BYU will counter with a defense that is 89th in opposing rush PPA, 95th in rush success rate and 84th in rush explosiveness outside of garbage time since Week 7. The Cougars also struggle to finish drives defensively, as they are 111th in opposing red-zone scoring rate this season and 113th in opposing points per scoring opportunity in the last 6 weeks. This is a very difficult spot situationally for BYU following its first loss of the season, playing on the road against an Arizona State team that has won every home game by at least 4.
