Badosa Getting On With Her Bad Self
It’s been a breakthrough event for Zidanšek. However, it’s been a breakout campaign for Badosa.
The Spaniard comes into this quarterfinal riding a nine-match winning streak. So far this season, Badosa, 23, reached the semifinals at Charleston and Madrid prior to picking up her first career WTA singles title two weeks ago in Belgrade. And all of that entire run of success has been unfolding over the past two months.
Already the French Open has witnessed Badosa surviving a third-round scare. She fought off match point against Ana Bogdan, overcoming the Romanian 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-4.
Facing 2019 French Open finalist Marketa Vondrousova, Badosa again was required to work three sets. She won 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
Badosa rebounded from 1-3 down to win the first season. She hit 30 winners in the match and capitalized on 30 unforced errors from Vondrousova. As a junior, Badosa also defeated Vondrousova in the 2015 French Open girl’s semifinals en route to winning that title.
Advantage Badosa
This will be the first head-to-head meeting on court between Badosa and Zidanšek as full WTA players. The last time they met was in the semifinals of the 2014 European Junior Championships. Badosa defeated Zidanšek 6-2, 6-4.
Badosa is 17-2 on clay this year. Both of her losses came in semifinal matches. Zidanšek is 6-4 on clay this season. However, she did reach the final in Bogota in April before losing to Maria Camila Osorio Serrano.
