Middlesbrough to sign Sporting Gijon defender Bernardo Espinosa

Boro say deal had been agreed for Espinosa to join them on July 1.

Boro who won promotion to the Premier League last season, released a statement saying a deal had been agreed for Espinosa to join them on July 1 when his contract with Spanish club Sporting Gijon has expired.

The statement said: "The club can confirm a deal has been agreed to sign Bernardo Espinosa to Boro when the defender's contract expires at Spanish side Sporting Gijon.

"The 26-year-old centre-half is set to join the club on July 1 and will become Aitor Karanka's second signing of the summer with Viktor Fischer having agreed a move to Teesside from Ajax."

The centre-half has been with Sporting since 2013 and has also previously played for Sevilla and Racing Santander.

Middlesbrough have already recruited Denmark winger Viktor Fischer from Ajax.
