Purdue’s Big Road Win

Freshman guard Jaden Ivey’s step-back 3-pointer from the top of the key with five seconds left lifted Purdue over Ohio State 67-65.

Ivey was an improbable hero. He is shooting just 21.2% from 3-point range this season and averaging 7.3 points a game.

However, Ivey scored a career-high 15 points against the Buckeyes. Eight of those came in the last 3.5 minutes when Purdue rallied from six points down to win a game in which it led for less than three minutes.

Junior forward Trevion Williams led Purdue with 16 points and played a big role in the Boilermakers outscoring Ohio State 36-8 in the paint. Junior guard Sasha Stefanovic added 15 points.

Williams is averaging nearly a double-double this season with 15.4 points and 9.5 rebounds a game. He has scored in double figures in 11 straight games and is averaging 19.3 points during Purdue’s winning streak.

Furthermore, Williams accounts for 35.3% of Purdue’s possessions and 35.8% of its shots. He has a 17.2 offensive rebounding percentage and a 28.2 defensive rebounding percentage while ranking sixth nationally with 6.5 fouls drawn per 40 minutes.

Stefanovic has an 11.1 scoring average along with a 64.2 effective field goal percentage and 67.0 true shooting percentage. Junior guard Eric Hunter is averaging 10.5 points and 3.3 assists a game.

Michigan Bounces Back

The Wolverines bounced back to handle visiting Maryland 87-63 as an 11-point favorite Tuesday after suffering its first loss of the season at Minnesota.

Michigan showed no hangover from the defeat as it jumped to a quick 17-3 lead behind three 3-pointers by senior guard Mike Smith and two by senior forward Isaiah Livers. The Wolverines went on to take a 42-25 halftime lead and coasted to victory.

Livers had 20 points, sophomore guard Franz Wagner added 15 and Smith finished with 11.

Michigan won handily despite getting a season-low three points from freshman center Hunter Dickinson, who is averaging 15.7 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots a game. Maryland double teamed Dickinson throughout but Michigan’s other scorers made the Terrapins pay.

Senior guard Eli Brooks also returned after missing the Minnesota game with a foot injury and scored seven points in 22 minutes.

Michigan shot 50% (12-for-24) on 3-pointers while holding Maryland to 21.1% (4-for-19) from beyond the arc.

Despite being contained by Maryland, Dickinson has a 70.3 effective field goal percentage and a 71.2 true field goal percentage.

Livers raised his season scoring average to 14.1 points with his 20-point outing and is also averaging 5.7 rebounds a game. Wagner is averaging 12.3 points and 7.2 rebounds.

Four Straight for Wolverines

Michigan has a four-game winning streak against Purdue, including beating the Boilermakers twice last season. The Wolverines won 84-78 in double overtime at home as 5.5-point favorites and 71-63 on the road as four-point picks.

Wagner scored 15 points for Michigan in the double-OT game, while Williams went off for 36 points and 15 rebounds for Purdue. In the rematch, Wagner had 22 points and Livers added 19 while Williams posted another double-double with 18 points and 10 boards.

Purdue is playing as well at is has all season, but Michigan has proven to be a tough matchup for just about everybody.

Pick: Michigan -2.5 (-112)
